HPLC Applications for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Part III)

analysis of Caulis LoniceraeContinuing our spotlight on some of our analytical solutions for traditional Chinese medicines with the release of a new application note this week. Our first blog post on this topic covered the analysis of wild chrysanthemum, ginkgo biloba, and ginseng. The second blog post covered the analysis of Gotu Kola, Giant Knotweed, Schizandrin, and Semen Raphani.

Here, we present the HPLC analysis of six active components of Caulis Lonicerae, which is also refered to as Ren Dong Teng or Jing Hua Teng, and is extracted from the stem of the Japanese honeysuckle plant. Caulis Lonicerae is a traditional Chinese Medicine and used to treat acute fever, headaches, respiratory infections, and epidermic diseases.

ren dong teng or jing hua teng analysisTo regulate this natural treatment, the Pharmacopoeia of the People‚Äôs Republic of China (PPRC) requires using two different HPLC methods, each of which identifies one single compound  two main target components leaving four of the major active compound undetermined. Here, we present a single HPLC method using a reversed-phase analytical column with high aromatic selectivity (Thermo Scientific Acclaim Phenyl-1 column) that determines all six active ingredients and is easily executed with rapid-separation liquid chromatography (LC) system (Thermo Scientific Dionex UltiMate 3000 RSLC system) in less than 15 minutes. Other HPLC methods that can identify the active components require long separation times and have insufficient peak resolution of them.

Application Note 299, HPLC Analysis of Six Active Components of Caulis Lonicerae Using a Phenyl-1 Column, (downloadable PDF) was developed at our Shanghai Applications Lab in China.
